Downey police Capt. Scott Loughner has been named as the city's interim police chief, authorities said Thursday.
Loughner will replace police Chief Leslie Murray, who is retiring after a 32-year career, and he will begin his new duties on Friday, according to Downey city officials.
"This appointment is an important step towards maintaining the Downey Police Department' s operational integrity and the safety of the public that will allow for a smooth transition to a permanent Chief," said Downey City Manager Roger Bradley.
Loughner was hired as an officer by the Downey Police Department in 2000 and served as a sergeant and a lieutenant prior to his promotion to captain in December 2021.
