In Pacoima, about 10 square blocks of neighborhoods are cooler this week and it’s thanks to cool pavement
According to KNX News Craig Fiegener, cool pavement is a thick paint-like coating that lowers asphalt by several shades. It goes over the streets, black asphalt, lowers the asphalt several shades, so it reflects heat, doesn't absorb it and lowers daytime and nighttime temperatures from maybe 3.5 to up to 15 degrees.
He spoke with a resident on Borden Ave. and Montford St. who says she notices the difference.
“Yes, I think it's better because we do have asphalt in the front yard, so I could tell the difference between being out there and being right here,” she explained.
Another resident said he was excited by the cool pavement.
“I'm glad they're putting it into our community, you know, to kind of help us out, to have the kids out,” he said.
Fiegener reported that it costs 80 cents per square foot to cover the street in cool pavement.
