As Hollywood’s film and television actors join the writers on the picket lines, the Directors Guild of America reached a deal with the studios last month.

But Lexi Alexander, who is a member of both the DGA and the Writers Guild, told L.A. Morning News she thinks the DGA should’ve joined the other unions.

“…I personally, as a member of both unions think we should have joined the other two unions in this strike because the industry really desperately needs to change,” she said. “None of us can survive.”

Alexander, a director, writer, and producer whose credits include "SWAT" and "Punisher: War Zone”, said the DGA was able to reach a deal with the Alliance of Motion Pictures and Television Producers because “they are a little bit more on the corporate side.”

“They get a good salary and they don't have the same concerns about A.I., because I think deep down inside every director thinks they can't be replaced by A.I. which I think they're wrong about,” she said. “But it has always been much easier to make a deal with the DGA.”

She also noted that the majority of the DGA members are actually below the line.

“So they are first assistant directors and it's not like they have a great life and get the most money,” she said. “And they're happy, but we tend to, in our own union in the DGA, kind of ignore them and ask only for the minimum. And I think they are so used to not asking for more and they are not interested in A.I. and rights and director's cut and all these creative rights. So you basically have a majority of membership that just wants to get back to work.”

She added that while the industry isn’t feeling the effects of the writers strike not, that next year it will become evident.
