It was the last night of the Foo Fighters' first run of 2024 tour dates, and in true party fashion frontman Dave Grohl made the event one to remember.
During their introduction of new-ish drummer Josh Freese at the Welcome To Rockville festival in Daytona Beach, FL on Saturday, May 11 -- a spot in their set that always ends up with a bunch of short cover songs thrown in -- Grohl decided to prank the crowd when he asked if they wanted to hear him rip a wicked guitar solo.
“You know who never gets a f***in’ solo? Me, god damn it, I never get a f***ing solo!," Dave told the Rockville crowd. "So, since this is the last night of the trip, I’m gonna do a f***ing solo. How about that? You may think, ‘That guy can’t play a f***ing solo.’ You wanna see me do a guitar solo right now?”
Turning his guitar away from the crowd, Grohl began fingertapping late Eddie Van Halen's guitar solo on Van Halen's "Eruption," before being caught in the act by cameras that showed Eddie's son, Wolfgang Van Halen whaling away at the side of the stage. “Dude, I told you to keep that cool, Wolfie! What the f*** are you doing right now?" Grohl said feigning shock before officially introducing him.
Although Wolfgang seemed to want to continue as he peeled off a little "Hot For Teacher," Grohl had to chase him away before their set became too Van Halen-heavy, and dedicated "My Hero" to Wolfie and his late dad. "Since Wolfie took all that f***ing time to pull off that joke with us, I’m gonna dedicate this one to him," Dave said. "Let’s sing this one for him, and let’s sing this one for his f***ing dad too."
