The National Weather Service has issued a frost advisory for the Santa Clarita Valley Monday morning as the mercury was expected to dip low enough to cause frost to form and damage crops and other sensitive plants in that area.

The advisory was expected to be in effect until 9 a.m. Monday and include the cities of Lake Castaic, Newhall, Santa Clarita, and Valencia, according to the NWS.

Temperatures in those areas were expected to drop to 33 to 35 degrees, forecasters said.

The main way to protect plants from frost is to cover them with a blanket or row cover to trap the heat to keep them warmer, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac.

Motorists should give themselves extra time to defrost their vehicle windshields.

A freeze watch remains in effect from late Monday night through Tuesday morning but a wind advisory has expired.
