Our KNX Hero of the Week, Rosa Alcala, has spent her career making sure others are okay and healthy!

For the past 23 years, Rosa has helped lead the mobile health unit with AltaMed Health Services, an outreach program for the non-profit. Rosa and her team respond almost daily, looking for people who may need help accessing health care.

“We go and serve the underserved communities, giving free services, free health screens,” she told Heroes host Heather Jordan. “We do blood pressures, we do glucose. We're ready for any disaster that might happen in the city of L.A. and Orange County too.”

Most recently, Rosa's team helped when the Lineage warehouse fire erupted. They hit the streets in Boyle Heights to make sure anyone who needed medical assistance had someone to lean on and a safe space to do it.
“I would love everybody to come and see a doctor as soon as possible, as soon as your body's telling you something, you know, that something's different, but a lot of people don't have the resources,” she said. “They don't have the funds to go pay for an office visit at a doctor, so this is where AltaMed and the mobile unit come in.”

Rosa truly wants people to have a good life.

“I come from a very low-income family, you know, my parents were immigrants,” she said. “My mom suffered two strokes, so she didn't have no access to care or even knew how to take care of herself. So ever since I've seen that, you know, I've wanted to help. I wanted to be part of the medical field. I'm honored and humbled to be able to help people. It’s just in my blood to help those in need and not expect anything back. It makes me very happy, and it's just very fulfilling in my heart.”
