Authorities said a 2-inch gas main had been cracked open by crews completing repairs between the 200 to 300 blocks of Santa Monica Blvd.
Strong natural gas fumes could be seen billowing from the ground and saturated the air around the popular outdoor shopping plaza. Crews did not believe there was any potential for an explosion.
There’s no estimate on when the rupture might be fixed, KNX’s Pete Demetriou reported from the hazmat scene. Several streets were closed to traffic from Broadway to Wilshire.
