Gov. Gavin Newsom will attend the second Republican presidential debate Wednesday on behalf of President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign.
The California governor was tapped to lead the Biden campaign’s response to anything said during the debate in Simi Valley. A Biden spokesperson told Axios their strategy is to “push back on Republicans’ lies and highlight their extremism at every turn.”
Jack Pitney, a political science professor at Claremont McKenna College, told KNX News it’s a chance for Newsom to show off his political skills on the national stage.
“This is an opportunity for him to take shots at Republicans and win points with President Biden,” Pitney said. “He is very good in these settings. I expect that he will be very skillful at spin as he usually is, and so it’s a net plus for his national political standing.”
Newsom will get even more exposure at a one-on-one debate against Florida governor and presidential candidate Ron DeSantis scheduled for Nov. 30.
