Merchandise connected to Jackie Robinson -- who broke baseball's color barrier in 1947 and established himself as one of the greatest players in Dodgers history -- continues to be a draw at auctions.
As Chris Kuc of Front Office Sports noted, a bat that the Hall of Fame second baseman used during the 1949 All-Star Game sold for $1.08 million over the weekend. The identity of the new owner isn't known, but Rachel Robinson -- Jackie's 99-year-old widow -- confirmed in a statement to Goldin Auctions that the bat is legitimate.
"The bat has been in the Robinson family archives since the day it was first used by Jackie, and I guarantee that is 100% authentic," she said.
1949 marked the first of seven All-Star appearances for Robinson, who went 1-4 with three runs scored in a game that the National League lost to the American League 11-7.
Robinson would go on to win NL MVP in 1949, slashing .342/.432/.528 with 16 home runs, 124 RBIs, 86 walks, 37 stolen bases and a staggering 9.6 fWAR.
Jason Owens of Yahoo! Sports says that the only bat that's ever been sold for more is a $1.26 million
