Yemen is home to the world's largest humanitarian crisis, according to UNICEF, with about 21 million people in need of food, medical and economic assistance. Our KNX Helpful Honda Hero of the Week is a teenager from Porter Ranch, who's helping the Yemeni people.
Maddie Pira knows that a little bit of love can go a long way. The 17 year-old straight "A" student from Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks is re-selling clothes online, and proceeds go to the organization, Yemen Aid.
Maddie says the idea developed out of a simple action. "I was just selling clothes, because I had left-over clothes that I didn't want anymore."
Maddie quickly realized that she could use the money to make a difference. So, she thought back to something she learned in school. "In debate class, we talked about the Yemeni crisis that's going on right now. I realized that a lot of the money (from the clothing sales) would benefit more, if it was directed to people that really, really needed it."
Once an item is sold, Maddie donates the dollars directly to the Yemen Aid organization. "They use that money to give Yemeni civilians food and medical aid."
Friends and teachers at school have helped share Maddie's mission. And, the whole process has opened her eyes, about what she wants to do after she graduates from high school. "I either want to be a doctor or a lawyer," explains the incoming high school senior. "(They) are completely different things! But, I think they both have one common thread, which is helping others, which is something I am really passionate about!"
