KNX Hero: Ventura County veterinarian healing herds of pets

What happens when your pet llama or mini horse gets sick? It's unlikely a situation the local vet's office can accommodate. That's where large animal veterinarians like our KNX Hero of the Week step in to help.

Dr. Katie Nenneker (Dr. Nenn) and her team are hard at work in L.A. and Ventura Counties helping sick farm animals. She told KNX Hero producer Heather Jordan, "We're primarily mobile, which is a lot easier for a lot of our clients that have large animals. We come to you so we can do everything on site."

As a specialty vet, Dr. Nenn noticed an unfortunate trend- because of the astronomical cost, many pet owners are being forced to choose between a procedure or putting their animal down.

To alleviate some of the financial burdens, Dr. Nenn tried offering her services as cheaply as possible, but it wasn't enough, so she and her husband, Greg Marx, started the Nenn Foundation.

The Nenn Foundation collects donations to help subsidize medical and surgical procedures for large animals.

Dr. Nenn said, "Our goal is to really make this not only just to help the farm animals and owners, but to turn it into an educational opportunity and also to potentially help clinics across the United States that may be facing the same issues with their clients that we can hopefully help because of the funding."

Our KNX Hero's next dream is to one day build an animal hospital.
