Los Angeles Animal Services is partnering with the Los Angeles Police Department to crack down on animal abuse and illegal breeding on Skid Row, according to Mayor Karen Bass’ office on Wednesday.
This makes Bass’ November pilot program, which included training and animal cruelty cases for 100 LAPD officers and a dedicated Animal Control officer for Skid Row, permanent.
There will also be monthly spay and neuter clinics run by Women United for Animal Welfare.
“Our main focus is spay and neuter,” Jen Simms, a board member for WUAW, told KNX News’ Emily Valdez. “The overpopulation crisis is what feeds into everything.”
Animal activists who frequent Skid Row say the animals there are bred, used as currency for drugs, physically and sexually abused, often neglected, and sick.
