Two teenagers were arrested after they got into a collision with a sheriff's deputy who was trying to pull them over while they were on their e-bikes in Santa Clarita.
The crash happened Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Avenida Rancho Tesoro and Duke Dr. in Valencia, according to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputies say the suspect, described as a teenage boy on a black dirt bike, “intentionally veered into a deputy,” which caused the deputy to crash. The deputy was hospitalized and is expected to be ok.
Law enforcement agencies across SoCal have been trying to rein in the dangerous and often illegal behavior of those on e-bikes and e-motorcycles.
Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer told KNX News’ Jon Baird he’s handling two cases right now, in which people were killed and e-bikes were involved.
“We just saw a young man, 13 years old, die a week ago in Garden Grove, and we're conducting an investigation on how he got access to that e-bike, or if it was an e-motorcycle,” he said. “It's all under investigation, but I have an adult, 81-year-old substitute teacher at Lake Forest at El Toro High School, who passed away as a result of injuries from another.”
Spitzer said it’s got to stop.
“If the parents are not going to enforce the rules against their children and be the adult in the family, then I'll be the adult for the parents because I cannot allow this kind of activity to go on in our community,” he said.
In the case involving the teacher, the boy’s mother was charged with involuntary manslaughter for allowing her son to keep riding the e-motorcycle.
