“The world forever changed on September 11, 2001,” Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore said. “And today, 22 years later, many of us are still reminded of where we were when we heard the first announcement of an explosion on the tower and what uncertainty lied (sic) ahead as we saw the second strike and the growing account as first responders throughout America rushed to work.”

During the ceremony, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass recalled the response of the Los Angeles Fire Department following the attacks.

“For many, including brave members of the Los Angeles Fire Department, these hours, days, and weeks following the attacks on 9/11 were spent serving this country,” she said. “Just hours after the attacks, members of our own fire department, Urban Search and Rescue task force drove out to March Air Force Base and boarded a plane headed for Fort Dix New Jersey.”

LAFD Chief Kristen Crowley honored the lives lost, including those who died from 9/11-related illnesses.

"I share these numbers with you, so that we never ever allow ourselves to become complacent and numb as we may move further and further away each year," she said.

Wreaths were placed in front of a piece of the South Tower as a bell rang 10 times to honor the lives lost.
