A large bear was seen roaming around a San Dimas neighborhood Wednesday, prompting calls to the Los Angeles Department’s San Dimas Station and the department of Fish and Game, LASD said.
At least one San Dimas school was locked down as the bear was spotted roaming the campus during morning drop off. The school is about two miles from the San Gabriel Mountains.
“It was the worst time ever [to lockdown],” said Kim Morton, a paraeducator at Shull Elementary School. “We were locked down for about an hour, from around 7:45 a.m. to almost 9 a.m.”
The bear was spotted on the school’s north campus, near Auto Centre Drive, Morton said, adding that children were ushered into classrooms and the school cafeteria as the bear lingered in a tree and lockdown was implemented once it climbed down.
Officials said the bear had moved on to a residential neighborhood by around 10 a.m. and deputies were monitoring the bear’s activity in a backyard while they awaited fish and game officers.
Helicopters over the scene captured the bear swatting at hummingbird feeders before ultimately knocking them down and eating the nectar inside.
The bear was tranquilized and taken by the Department of Fish and Game shortly after 11 a.m., according to CBS 2 News.
