LOS ANGELES (KNX) — Thousands of people have shared their two cents following the "slap heard round the world" — also know as the night Will Smith slapped Chris Rock across the face on live television. Tuesday, Hollywood's Laugh Factory also spoke out, with words of support for Rock.
According to ABC 7, the sign outside of the club on Sunset Boulevard now reads, "Laugh Factory supports First Amendment Right for all comedians. The comedy community loves and supports you Chris."
The message comes after the world watch Rock deliver a joke about the hairstsyle of Smith's wife Jada Pinkett Smith. A joke in which her shaven head was compared to "G.I. Jane."
Moments later, Smith was out of his seat and in front of Rock, slapped him, and stormed off stage. Back in his seat he was heard telling the comedian to keep Smith's wife's name out of his mouth.
Whether at home or in the Academy Awards audience that night, no one knew if what they had just seen was real or staged.
We've all since learned it was very real — and statements have been issued by The Academy, Smith, and Pinkett Smith about the situation.
Speaking exclusivly with Philadelphia, Penn. news station ABC 6, Will Smith's mother said she's never seen her son behave that way.
"He is a very even, people person. That's the first time I've ever seen him go off. First time in his lifetime...I've never seen him do that," Carolyn Smith said.
She went on to say that his reaction to Rock's joke though, should not define him entirely and the family remains proud of him for his accomplishments.
