LOS ANGELES (KNX) — Rideshare is sure to save you more money than driving yourself around as gas prices continue to soar, but you may notice a new surcharge on your Uber, Lyft, and Uber Eats bills soon.

"We’ve been closely monitoring rising gas prices and their impact on our driver community," Lyft spokesperson CJ Macklin said in a statement shared with the news outlet.

"Driver earnings overall remain elevated compared to last year, but given the rapid rise in gas prices we’ll be asking riders to pay a temporary fuel surcharge, all of which will go to drivers."

While Macklin didn't share the details about how much the surcharge would be, when it would be implemented or when it will end, he did say that the company will "share more details shortly."

The news of additional charges comes about three days after Uber announced temporary surcharges ranging from $0.35 to $0.55 per transaction.

"We know that you’ve felt the sting of record-high gas prices, which has affected how much you’re able to earn on Uber," Uber said in a statement to drivers.

"In an effort to reduce the burden of high fuel costs, we are rolling out a temporary fuel surcharge to support drivers and couriers. 100% of this new surcharge will go directly to you."

On each Uber ride, customers will pay a surcharge of either $0.45 or $0.55 and Uber Eats customers will pay either $0.35 or $0.45 on each order, depending on their location.

"The surcharge amount will vary by city, depending on average trip distances and local gas price increases," Uber continued.

For now, the temporary surchage is set to expire on May 10, but Uber said it will continue to monitor gas prices and change the termination date accordingly.

To further assist drivers, Uber has also partnered with GetUpside to help drivers earn cashback at more than 25,000 gas stations across the United States. To learn more, click here.
