Loved ones of Glen Sprowl Jr., who was one of three victims killed in the Cook’s Corner mass shooting on Aug. 23, are remembering him for his heroism.

Mark Salmon, a close friend of Sprowl Jr., told KNX News’ Emily Valdez in an exclusive interview that Sprowl Jr. “was just one of those guys that would go way beyond the call of duty when it came to helping people.”

“Now, he looked like a big old thug, but man, he had a heart of gold,” he recalled.

According to Salmon, Sprowl Jr. was having dinner at Cook’s Corner with a friend on Aug. 23.

“They heard what they thought were firecrackers and then Glenn realized it was gunfire,” Salmon said. “And so, he told his friend, ‘No, that's gunfire. Stay here.’

Salmon said that while the shooter, John Snowling, went back to his car, “Glenn wrangled everybody into the bar and from what I was told, his quote was, ‘Lock the door. I'm going to stop this.’”

He added that witnesses recalled seeing his friend get “close to within arms reach” of Snowling.

“The shooter managed to get a single shot off which, struck him and killed him,” Salmon said. “But it bought time for the police to show up before the shooter could re-enter the bar.’

Salmon said he believes Sprowl Jr. didn’t give his actions a second thought.

“I mean, it was instinct,” he said. “[Sprowl Jr.’s] like, ‘Go, it's go time.’ Unarmed and solo. He took the shooter head-on and the family - and especially Little G…he just wants everyone to know how proud he is of his dad, and that the amount of suffering that he's in cannot compare to the courage and the bravery of his dad's saving lives.”

Sprowl Jr. leaves behind 19-year-old son, a 10-year-old daughter and a seven-year-old son.

A GoFundMe is being raised for Sprowl Jr.’s funeral. You can find it here.
