On Friday, city leaders and community members marked the one-year anniversary of the Windsor Hills collision that killed six people by unveiling the Slauson Six Memorial Bench and Community Garden.

The memorial is on a piece of land donated by the owners of the gas station where the collision occurred. The murals were created by artist Fulton Washington, who also goes by MR. WASH.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly Mitchell said the memorial serves multiple purposes.

“This memorial gives us a place to if you will lay down the burden to honor them,” Mitchell said. “But it gives us a place to come to, to reflect and think about, I think not only those six lives lost and what their futures could have been but what responsibility each of us individually have to make sure that all of our communities are safe.”

Among those killed were Asherey Ryan, 23, her unborn baby, Ryan’s year-old son Alonzo Quintero, Ryan’s boyfriend, Reynold Lester, Nathesia Lewis, 43, and Lynette Noble, 38.

Shashauna Kerr, Asherey Ryan’s sister, said the memorial is a place of healing.

“We now have a space where we could go and connect with our sister and our nephews where we could come and we could think and clear our minds and get grounded again,” she said. “We have a space where we can honor our lost loved ones and for that, we are so grateful.”

Nicole Linton, the driver of the Mercedes-Benz, was charged with six counts of murder and five counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence.

She remains in jail without bail. Her next court date is scheduled for Sept. 12.
