In a hearing on Tuesday about health care for transgender kids, State Senator Mike Moon (R-Ash Grove) said he continued to support 12-year-old children being able to marry adults.
In an exchange about parental rights captured in a video circulating social media, Representative Peter Merideth (D-St. Louis) points out to Moon that he had previously voted “no” on a bill that raised the minimum age of marriage from 12 to 17.
“You said actually that should be the law because it’s the parent’s right and the kid’s right to decide what’s best for them, to be raped by an adult,” Meredith said.
Moon responded by asking if Merideth knew any kids who had gotten married at 12 years old, to which Merideth responded, “I don’t need to.”
Moon shot back, saying “I do — and guess what? They’re still married.”
The Ash Grove senator was not the only one to vote against raising the minimum marriage age — back in 2018, 50 Representatives voted against it.
