Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) spoke out on former President Donald Trump’s abortion comments this week, saying he’s trying to be moderate but is just coming off “stupid.”
“So, when — what’s his name — said what he said yesterday, he either is stupid, or he thinks the rest of us are stupid,” Pelosi said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
Pelosi’s remark about Trump came after she affirmed her own stance on abortion.
“Well, first, let me say the issue about a woman’s right to choose, it’s a democracy issue. This is about freedom, freedom of women to make their decision, families to make their decisions,” Pelosi said.
While Trump has said he believes it’s solely up to the states to make their own decisions, Pelosi pushed back, saying that she thinks he truly has a core “belief” but is just not sharing it. She even shared some criticism of the media and its coverage of Trump’s announcement on Monday.
“He takes great pride in overturning Roe v. Wade. Takes great pride in it. And then the way the press wrote it up just cracked me up because it said, ‘Donald Trump believes that state—’ he doesn’t believe anything,” Pelosi said. “He believes in his political survival, and that’s what he’s trying to accommodate.”
She continued, saying that it’s impossible for someone to “be a little pro-life.”
“You’re either there, or you’re not there. And people see that. So, he may have outsmarted — well, I hate to say outsmarted because what? It doesn’t seem to apply — but why would the press say ‘he believes?’ He doesn’t believe anything,” she said.
Pelosi isn’t the only politician to respond to Trump’s stance, with several Republicans, including Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) who said he didn’t agree with Trump’s opinions on the matter and would continue to push for a national 15-week ban.
Trump responded to Graham earlier this week on Truth Social, saying that abortion is a losing policy for Republicans and that they needed to move on.

“Terminating Roe v. Wade was, according to all Legal Scholars, a Great Event, but sometimes with Great Events come difficulties,” Trump wrote in a post to Truth Social. “Many Good Republicans lost Elections because of this Issue, and people like Lindsey Graham, that are unrelenting, are handing Democrats their dream of the House, Senate, and perhaps even the Presidency.”
