A new report from the NTSB on the train derailment in East Palestine, OH indicates a wheel bearing overheated moments before the incident.
Preliminary data shows the bearing on the 23rd car was 253 degrees over at the time of the derailment, considered over the critical temperature threshold.
The NTSB says nearby surveillance footage just before the derailment also appeared to show a wheel bearing in the final stages of overheat failure.
Systems then sounded an alarm and an initiated an automatic emergency break automatically, stopping the train.
Crews also applied the train's breaks. They then told dispatchers they saw fire and smoke, and that derailment was possible.
Several parts of the train have been shipped away for further investigation.
