According to court records, the 57-year-old Retton was arrested May 17 in Marion County, about an hour and 40 minutes south of Pittsburgh, and released on $1,500 bond the same day.
At 16, the Fairmont native and eventual International Gymnastics Hall of Famer became the first American woman to win gold in women’s all-around gymnastics competition during the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.
Retton, nicknamed “America’s Sweetheart” went on to do commercials for companies like the former pharmacy, Revco.
In 2023, Retton battled life-threatening pneumonia and a crowd-funding page was started to help pay for her medical bills, because she did not have insurance.
As of last summer, Retton was still dealing with the lasting effects of pneumonia.
