The winning streak for “Oppenheimer” and “The Bear” continued at the 30th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on Saturday night.
The Christopher Nolan movie swept the movie categories, including Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Cillian Murphy accepted the Outstanding Performance Lead Actor award while Robert Downey Jr. accepted Outstanding Supporting Actor.
Lily Gladstone and Da’Vine Joy Randolph also continued their winning streaks this award season. Gladstone won Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for her role in “Killers of the Flowermoon,” while Randolph won Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for “The Holdovers.”
FX’s “The Bear” swept the TV comedy category, taking home the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. Its stars Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri won in their respective acting categories.
Netflix’s “Beef” was a big winner in the limited series category as its stars Ali Wong and Steven Yuen won in their respective categories.
HBO’s “Succession” walked away with only one award, which was Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. Pedro Pascal won for Leading Actor in a Drama Series for “The Last of Us” while Elizabeth Debicki won Lead Actress in a Drama Series for “The Crown.”
While the show celebrated the outstanding performances from the past year, it also reflected on its historic strike.
In her speech, SAG AFTRA President Fran Drescher called the union’s members “champions”, remarking on their “courage and conviction” during the strike.
“The journey was arduous, it came with great sacrifice and unrelenting stress,” Drescher said.
“Your solidarity ignited workers around the world, triggering what forever be remembered as the hot labor summer.”
After winning Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, “Oppenheimer” star Kenneth Branagh recalled the movie’s cast members walking out of the film’s premiere on July 14 as the Actors’ Strike was just about to begin. He called it a “full circle moment.”
“When we were all last together, it was at the premiere of this film on July 14, last year when the strike was just about to begin, and led by our fearless leader, the great Cillian Murphy, we went from the red carpet and we didn't see the film that night,” he said. “We happily went in the direction of solidarity with your good selves."
During the show the union also honored Barbara Streisand, who was given the SAG life achievement award. In her speech, Streisand recalled her desire to want to be in the movies.
“I wanted to be in the movies even though I knew I didn’t look like the other women on the screen,” she recalled. “My mother said, ‘you better learn how to type,’ but I didn’t listen. Somehow, some way, thank you God, it all came true.”
The Screen Actors Guild Awards was held at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall and livestreamed on Netflix.
