Rancho Palos Verdes is getting closer to installing surveillance cameras that can detect and monitor wildfires.

After several months of discussion and planning, the RPV City Council is considering the helpful tool as an additional safeguard. It would be the first city in the Palos Verdes Peninsula to do so. None of the four cities that comprise the area have wildfire-monitoring cameras.

The council is contemplating a contract with Pano AI, a technology company that deployed 360-degree, high definition cameras, satellite systems, and software to track fires.

Larry Maizlish, chairman of the city’s Emergency Preparedness Committee, said the company’s technology offers particularly helpful features that can save lives and pinpoint the origin of a dangerous blaze.

“This Pano system is monitored 24/7 and being able to rewind the video and potentially see the starting cause of a fire is an important tool that is lacking in fire management today,” he said.

Maizlish added the system could be an important “public safety step.”

“Pano’s Wildfire Detection System is a major step towards community hardening and reducing the risk of property damage to our residents’ homes,” Maizlish said. “We could also promote RPV as being one of the leaders in this wildfire protection and public safety step.”
