Family members have turned in a man wanted by police in connection with a sexual assault at Chapman University last Friday.
The alleged victim said she was making a phone call in the lower courtyard of a residence hall on campus at around 1 a.m. when a man wearing a skeleton mask jumped out of a bush and struck her in the face. She reportedly fell to the ground and was assaulted, but she managed to fight back and fend off the attacker. Police said she did not suffer any serious injuries.
Relatives brought Dalante Jerome Bell, 22, of Anaheim to the campus Monday evening after he was captured on surveillance footage the night of the attack. That footage was heavily circulated in local media.
Bell reportedly identified himself to law enforcement as the man captured by those surveillance cameras. He was arrested on suspicion of assault with intent to commit rape. As of Tuesday, Bell was being held in lieu of a $500,000 bail.
Bell was not a Chapman University student, according to college administrators. Police told The Orange County Register he had no connection to the school or the alleged victim.
