Sandy Fire reaches nearly 1,700 acres with 15% containment

The Sandy Fire continued to grow on Wednesday, reaching 1,698 acres with a 15% containment.

In a morning update from the Ventura County Fire Department, Capt. Trevor Johnson revealed that 900 fire crews were battling the fire.


The fire started Monday around 10 a.m. off Sandy Ave. and quickly grew. As of Wednesday, at least one home was reported to be destroyed in the fire. No injuries have been reported.

Fire officials urged residents in fire-impacted areas to keep an eye out for changing conditions and to leave immediately if they feel unsafe or concerned.

SHELTERS:

For overnight stays, people can head to Rancho Santa Susana Community Park, located at 5005 E Los Angeles Ave.

For animals, small domestic animals can go to Simi Valley Animal Shelter, located at 670 W Los Angeles Ave., or Camarillo Animal Shelter, located at 600 Aviation Dr.

Horses and livestock can be taken to the Ventura County Fairgrounds located at 10 E Harbor Blvd.

SCHOOL CLOSURES

All schools in the Simi Valley Unified School District are closed at this time. Officials will reveal later in the day if the closures will stretch into Thursday.
