On Sunday, President Joe Biden announced that he would no longer seek reelection and instead finish out his term, but now Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is calling on him to also resign from office.
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden shared on X Sunday.

While Biden says he will shift focus to closing out his current term, Johnson shared on social media that Biden should also step down “at this unprecedented juncture in American history.”
“If Joe Biden is not fit to run for President, he is not fit to serve as President. He must resign the office immediately. November 5 cannot arrive soon enough,” Johnson wrote.
Johnson went on to take a shot at the party as a whole, saying it “forced the Democrat nominee off the ballot, just over 100 days before the election.”
“Having invalidated the votes of more than 14 million Americans who selected Joe Biden to be the Democrat nominee for president, the self-proclaimed ‘party of democracy’ has proven exactly the opposite,” Johnson wrote.
Biden has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his choice to replace him as the Democratic nominee, but Johnsonsaid that with her at the helm, the Democratic party’s “prospects are no better.”
He says that Harris “co-owns the disastrous policy failures of the Biden Administration. As second in command and a completely inept border czar, Harris has been a gleeful accomplice — not only in the destruction of American sovereignty, security, and prosperity, but also in the largest political coverup in U.S. history. She has known for as long as anyone of his incapacity to serve.”
The decision from Biden comes after weeks of scrutiny and worry amongst Democrats after his disastrous debate against former President Donald Trump in June.
Biden shared Sunday that he will speak to the nation later this week.
