Basketball stars have become larger than life during Steph Curry’s 13-year career, especially with the advent of social media.
Some say athletes should shut up and dribble, while others are looking to players like Curry for social commentary when hot button issues arise. It all comes with the territory of being a superstar in the 21st century.
Steph discussed his growing visibility in America’s social sphere in an illuminating profile written by Rolling Stone’s Matt Sullivan, which was published on Monday. Curry shared some cool nuggets about his interactions with former president Barack Obama, Chief Medical Advisor to the President Dr. Anthony Fauci and the weight he feels in the “Trump Era” while commenting on issues.
Steph also couldn’t help but discuss a moment he wishes he could take back from 2014, in Game 5 of the first round against the Los Angeles Clippers. That contest occurred against the backdrop of racist comments from Clippers governor Donald Sterling that had recently surfaced. According to tapes published by TMZ, Sterling claimed he didn’t want his girlfriend to take photos with brown or black people or invite them to Clippers games.
Curry said he spoke to Clippers captain Chris Paul about boycotting the game and wishes they would have followed through, instead of protesting by wearing their warmups inside out. The Clippers would toss theirs to the court in solidarity afterwards.
“One of my biggest regrets is not boycotting the game,” Curry told me. “That was a moment to leverage beyond anything we probably could have said.”
Sterling was eventually banned for the NBA for life, but boycotting that game would have been a monumental moment in sports.
As for the current political climate, Curry admits it’s not always easy to take a stand and make his voice heard.
“The current events of the Trump era, I don’t wake up and say, ‘I wanna go at that conversation,’” Curry told Sullivan. “Some of this stuff falls on your doorstep and people want a perspective or comment, and sometimes you cough that up unsolicited.”
I highly recommend reading the entire feature for a look at how the 34-year-old Curry has grown, as he also discusses the positive impact of therapy and how he handles his celebrity.
