Man dead, 3 others injured after avalanche at Lake Tahoe ski resort

One person is dead and three others were injured following an avalanche at a ski resort near Lake Tahoe, officials said.

It was reported at 9:30 a.m. at Palisades Tahoe ski resort.

According to Placer County Sheriff's Sergeant Dave Smith, patrol and mountain operations teams shut down both sides of the mountain for the day as they performed a search.

The Placer County Sheriff's Department later identified the deceased man as 66-year-old Kenneth Kidd.

"Our heart felt condolences go out to the family and friends of Mr. Kidd," the office wrote in a post on X.

Authorities say the search has concluded.

LA's Afternoon News spoke with avoid skier Steve Merrifield, who runs Demo Sport, a ski supply company in the Bay Area, to understand how this rare occurrence could have happened.
