During a radio interview, guitarist, Jane Wiedlin, shared, “but when I found out we got it, I just cried until I peed my pants. It was so exciting.”
Prior to this year, the band has never been nominated to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, but have been eligible since 2006.
For female rock artists, it’s been significantly more difficult to be recognized and included in any induction ceremonies.
Weidlin added, “It’s been a long, strange trip. I mean, we had gotten used to being rejected for a variety of reasons. Of course, first for a long time because we were women. And then I don’t know why after that because we’re so awesome. But we never really thought we’d even get nominated, and then, of course, it’s you get nominated, but then you don’t actually win or whatever."
The Los Angeles-formed group is the first and only all-female group to write and record an album to hit No.1 with Beauty and the Beat. Tracks like “We Got the Beat” and “Our Lips Are Sealed” made the band stars and earned them a GRAMMY nomination in 1982, for Best New Artist.
