And the erstwhile 'winner' is, according to the study from the language learning platform Preply -- Miami, Florida! If rudeness had a gold medal, they'd be standing on an Olympics platform. And next to them would be the citizens of Philly, Tampa and Boston.
The survey used several factors to determine its findings, including a lack of awareness in public, noisiness in shared places, rudeness of service staff at businesses, and more.
Preply also polled the residents in each city about the “social behaviors they noticed” where they lived. This was then used to calculate the rudeness of each city on a scale from one to ten.
While Miami has been dubbed “the rudest in 2024,” receiving a 9.88 on the rudeness scale, several other notable cities were also ranked for not being nicest, despite some of their monikers.
Even though it’s also known as the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was ranked as the second rudest city in the country with a score of 9.12, followed by Tampa, Florida, at number three with a score of 8.88.
“If you’re in Miami, FL, Philadelphia, PA, or Tampa, FL, don’t be surprised if you come across the rudest people you’ve ever met,” Preply wrote.
Rounding out the top five included Louisville, Kentucky (8.72) and Oakland, California (8.67).
The poll noted that several of the top 10 cities have only gotten more rude in recent years, with at least three placing five spots higher than they did in 2022.
The surveyors also noted the top rude behaviors reported in cities were a lack of self-awareness and a lack of care for others.
The poll also highlighted that politics is playing a role in rudeness, with 50% of Americans reporting that their cities have become more rude ahead of the 2024 election.
However, not everything is as negative as it seems, as Preply also ranked the least rude cities in the country, with Omaha, Nebraska, earning the lowest score on the rudeness scale with a 6.24.
The other least rude cities included Minneapolis, Minnesota (6.35); San Diego, California (6.68); Columbus, Ohio (6.7); and Kansas City, Missouri (6.78).
