Sloane is having a big week - She just turned nine and is wrapping up third grade at Dahlia Heights Elementary School in Eagle Rock. Perhaps even more noteworthy, she now sits on a community committee for Councilman Kevin de Leon.

It all started when Sloane decided to help the people she saw living on the streets of her hometown.

One of her first projects was raising money for Mercy Housing. By hand making beads and little keychains, she managed to raise $600 which she donated to Mercy. Sloane's initiative inspired her school to collect and donate items for the homeless such as mouthwash, conditioner, and shampoo.

Another project Sloane spearheaded was decorating tiny homes. She rallied her fellow students to join her, and together they painted signs for residents of the tiny home villages.

'We would draw, like, welcoming things for the homeless, 'Welcome to your new tiny home' and stuff like that. We also wrote bright, good, positive things," said Sloane.

Dahlia Heights Elementary School principal Kristen Shaw says Sloane is truly a remarkable young person.

'When they did the ribbon cutting for the tiny homes to see her up there, I mean, she really took it upon herself to spearhead this whole thing and present in front of the neighborhood council. And she presented to our staff so the teachers could get on board. She has always had this sense of social justice and doing what's right for her community,' said principal Shaw.

When asked how it makes her feel knowing she's helping people, nine-year-old Sloane said, "Well, it makes me feel excited and also makes me feel less worried because I know that they are going to be ok."
