President Trump has announced new tariffs on crops being brought in to the United States.

The president says the tariffs on external agricultural products will start on April 2nd. He posted a message online to farmers saying, "Get ready to start making a lot of agricultural product to be sold INSIDE of the United States" and "have fun".

Tariffs on food imports could affect fruits, vegetables and nuts. They have usually accounted for about 50 percent of the in-bound crop shipments to the US, according to figures from the USDA.

Sugar and other tropically-grown crops like coffee and cocoa account for another 15 percent.

The US imported about $45 billion worth of agricultural products from Mexico in 2023.
