The opening weekend of Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” at the landmark Alex Theatre in Glendale was so popular, the theater is extending its showing of the film in 70 millimeter.
“The response by the public, apparently they want the Alex back in the movie business because they came out in droves by the thousands and put us, like, right there at the top-grossing of 70 millimeter presentations of this film,” Miles Williams, the artistic director of the Alex, told KNX News’ Karen Adams.
He said that putting the movie in 70 millimeter is a “big deal.”
“You know, there's a phrase that I hear called ‘always on film, and a lot of the smaller vintage cinemas like the Vista or Quentin Tarantino's projects, they've been incredibly successful, always showing on film, both 35 and 70,” he said. “I know that Gen Z in particular just loves this, and they flock to these types of experiences because there is something different about seeing it on film.”
Williams added that it's been a great few weeks for L.A.'s historic movie houses that are making comebacks, such as the Cinerama Dome and the Bruin Theater in Westwood.
“I think there's a zeitgeist there, and I think that that's part of what drove the crowds to the Alex,” he said. “You know, we're in Glendale. We're on the east side of L.A. It's a very accessible place to get to.”
“The Odyssey” is showing at the Alex through August 20th.
