WARREN (WWJ) – Dillon Reeves, a 13-year-old seventh grader at Carter Middle School in Warren, Michigan, became a hero on his way home from school on Wednesday.

Reeves was honored at a press conference Thursday, a day after he rushed to the front of his school bus to bring it to a stop when the driver lost consciousness at the wheel.

Surveillance video from inside the bus released by Warren Consolidated Schools shows the woman driving the bus fanning herself with her hat and dispatching over the radio to report she wasn’t feeling well.

“I’m feeling really dizzy, I’m gonna have to pull over,” she said. “And I need someone to come get my kids.”

Shortly after hanging up the radio, she loses consciousness and slumps in the driver’s seat, with the bus still in motion.

That’s when young Dillon noticed something was wrong, running to the wheel and putting his foot on the break.

“Someone call 911… now! Someone call 911,” he said to his classmates, who had begun to scream. “I don’t care! Someone call 911.”

In a lighter moment during a press conference at the Warren Consolidated Schools Administration Building, his father, Steve Reeves, shared how he learned of his son’s heroic actions.

“Police officer called me and my first response was ‘what the heck did he do?’ And they were like, ‘no, no, this is a good call.’ He goes ‘your son’s a hero,’” he said.

While Dillon Reeves was on-hand at the press conference with his parents and younger sister, he did not speak. WWJ’s Jon Hewett reported the family said all of the attention is “a bit overwhelming” for the 13-year-old. He’ll be honored later and likely will speak later when he is recognized.

The bus driver remains hospitalized under supervision and is expected to recover, Hewett reported. What caused her to lose consciousness is not yet clear.
