WARREN (WWJ) – School officials in Warren are praising the actions of a 7th grade student who took control of a school bus Wednesday as the driver experienced a medical emergency.

While taking the students home from Carter Middle School Wednesday afternoon, the bus driver became lightheaded and lost consciousness while driving in the area of Masonic and Bunert, Superintendent Robert Livernois in a message posted to the Warren Consolidated Schools Facebook page.

A “quick-thinking” 7th grade student saw the driver was in distress and stepped to the front of the bus to bring it to a stop without incident, Livernois said.

First responders with the Warren Police and Fire Departments quickly responded and tended to the driver. Officials did not disclose the condition of the driver.

The students were loaded onto a different bus to make their way home.

“The actions of the student who helped stop the bus made all the difference today, and I could not be prouder of his efforts,” Livernois said.

No other details regarding the incident were immediately released.
