PHOTOS: St. Louis firefighters mourn tragic death of partner after roof collapse

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - It was a sad scene outside a building fire in north St. Louis when crews learned firefighter Benjamin Polson died after being "buried" by a roof collapse. It was first line-of-duty death for the St. Louis Fire Department in 20 years.

St. Louis Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson says two firefighters were on the second floor of the actively burning building and looking for possible occupants. He says the roof collapsed just as they decided to head back out.

One firefighter was killed and the other was taken to the hospital with undisclosed injuries, but was conscious and breathing.
