June 3rd is an auspicious day in the history of the Wichita State baseball program...

*30 years ago on this night (6/3/1991): in a second-round winner's bracket game at the College World Series in Omaha, Wichita State defeated long-time Missouri Valley Conference rival Creighton 3-2 in 12 innings; some consider this one of the greatest college baseball games of all time.

The immortalized play from this game came with one out in the 12th inning, as Creighton got a base hit, and WSU centerfielder Jim Audley with a one-hop throw was able to snuff out the potential tying run at home plate, after a tag from catcher Doug Mirabelli. Here's the radio call of that famous play with Mike Kennedy & Tom Kosich on KNSS:

Rosenblatt Stadium was jammed with more than 18,000 fans, many rooting for the hometown Blue Jays; Creighton with the loss fell to 0-7 that season against the Shockers.

*25 years ago on this day (6/3/1996): Florida State defeated Wichita State 8-4 at the College World Series in Omaha. To date, this was the last time the Shockers played a game in the College World Series.
