Wedge's first big-league game was at Fenway Park in Boston, an afternoon game for the Red Sox hosting the Milwaukee Brewers.

With the Red Sox trailing 13-4 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Wedge was used as a pinch-hitter for designated hitter Jack Clark. With a 2-1 count, Wedge lined a single to centerfield in his first major league at bat.

Wedge played in parts of four seasons in the major leagues, but he only got 20 base hits. He eventually became a successful manager with the Cleveland Indians for seven seasons, and three more with the Seattle Mariners.

Wedge is currently the head baseball coach at Wichita State.
