It all started late Friday night, after the news of the Mets reportedly signing Starling Marte broke, when Twitter user @kierang3573 tweeted at Stro to try to get him to re-sign with the Mets:

Stroman responded, as he often does with fans, apparently with some inside info that he’s either not coveted or prioritized by the Mets’ front office:

Stroman later doubled down with a tweet that said “The source is me,” indicating he’s been made aware of the situation.

Fans from Anaheim, Milwaukee, Toronto, and several other locations and fan bases (including the Mets) chimed in trying to get Stroman’s attention, although one hardy Mets fan tripled down by bringing in Uncle Stevie:

Cohen has said that the Mets will prioritize pitching this winter, and that’s especially likely now that the team added Marte, Mark Canha, and Eduardo Escobar on Friday.

Currently, the Mets’ rotation if left alone would likely include Jacob deGrom, Taijuan Walker, Carlos Carrasco, David Peterson, and Tylor Megill, although three of the first four missed significant time due to injury in 2021. Overall, including openers, 19 different pitchers started a game for the Mets last season.

Stroman opted out of 2020 due to COVID concerns, and then accepted the Mets’ qualifying offer to return in 2021, pitching to a 3.02 ERA in 179 innings over 33 starts, the latter two totals leading the team. Over seven seasons in Toronto and New York, the Long Island native, who turns 31 in May, had a 3.63 ERA in 179 appearances.
