Girls' flag football is officially coming to Kansas high schools.
The Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) has approved the sport, marking a significant step forward for opportunities in girls' athletics across the state. Supporters say the move isn’t about asking for permission anymore—it’s about recognizing that girls can and should have the chance to play.
The decision follows growing interest in flag football nationwide, with participation numbers rising and increased backing from organizations like the NFL. Schools across Kansas are now expected to begin exploring how to implement programs, including building teams, hiring coaches, and setting schedules.
Advocates emphasize that this moment represents more than just adding another sport. It reflects a broader shift toward expanding access and equity in athletics, giving female athletes another platform to compete and develop.
With approval now in place, the focus turns to rollout. While timelines may vary by school, the expectation is that girls' flag football will soon become a familiar sight on fields across Kansas.
