A former University of Kansas track legend set a course record Monday morning on Patriots' Day at the 129th Boston Marathon.
Sharon Lokedi took first place in the women’s division, setting a course record time of 2 hours, 17 minutes, and 22 seconds. She was a 10-time All-American for the Jayhawks during her days in Lawrence.
Lokedi, originally from Eldoret, Kenya, spent four years at KU, winning a dozen Big 12 Conference championships, and setting school records as a part of the track and field team.
Last year, she took the silver medal in the Boston Marathon. In 2022, Lokedi pulled off an upset win at the New York City Marathon, winning the gold in her first-ever marathon.
Today, Lokedi outran two-time defending Boston Marathon champion Hellen Obiri over the final mile, a year after losing a sprint down Boylston Street to her in one of the closest finishes in race history. Lokedi finished 19 seconds ahead of Obiri today, and more than two-and-a-half minutes faster than the previous Boston best.
She's currently signed with Under Armour, and lives in Flagstaff, Arizona.
