NASCAR veteran Joey Logano has participated in more than 450 races across 14 years, but new tracks can make any driver look and feel like a rookie.
On Sunday afternoon, Logano finished 15th in the Jockey Made in America 250 at Road America in Wisconsin. It was the first Cup race at the four-mile road course in 65 years.
"We did okay. Obviously, a new racetrack for us. It's been a long, long time since we first did Road America, first time for me," Logano told The DA Show on Tuesday. "I feel like we were doing okay until the last about five laps, and the rear tires fell off and we lost about seven spots. So, that's one of the things about a new racetrack: you don't know what you're going to fight, what you're going to struggle with until the race starts. And we figured that out a little bit late in the game, so we'll learn for next time.
"It's a four-mile racetrack with 14 turns. So, as you can imagine, there's something new around every corner for you if you've never been there. I think probably the biggest thing is the braking zone in the Turn 5 is so long... A lot of things like that came up, and just trying to find a compromise. You're not just turning left on a road course, so you have to compromise your car where it can turn left and right..."
Prior to the race, roughly 950 miles east of Road America, Joey Chestnut -- the greatest competitive eater of all-time -- ate a world-record 76 hot dogs and buns, winning his 14th Mustard Belt at the Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest in New York.
A miraculous feat for Chestnut, but an unappetizing competition for Logano.
"I'm like a burger and Coke guy. I'm not a big hot dog person. They're eating that many of them? No, thank you," Logano said. "If they're both sitting there, you've got to go burger, especially when you learn what's in a hot dog... I'm tossing them. We're going hamburgers, chicken, corn on the cob, maybe some asparagus, an ice-cold Coke, and we'll call it good."
Logano, who's the full-time driver of the No. 22 Ford Mustang GT for Team Penske, has 27 wins and 135 top-five finishes in 455 career races in the NASCAR Cup Series. The 31-year-old has also won 30 races and earned 95 top-five finishes in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.
