Max Scherzer has 'moderate to high grade' oblique strain, out 6-8 weeks

Max Scherzer’s injury that took him out of Wednesday’s start has been announced as a “moderate to high grade internal oblique strain,” and will miss roughly 6-8 weeks.

Scherzer immediately motioned to the dugout after throwing a pitch to Albert Pujols in the sixth inning of Wednesday’s outing, and said he had hoped he took himself out of the game before suffering a serious injury, but it wasn’t enough to keep him out for the next two months.

It is a big blow to the Mets rotation that is still missing Jacob deGrom, who hasn’t begun throwing off a mound yet despite a recent MRI showing “continued healing” in his scapula. Tylor Megill is on the IL with biceps inflammation as well.

Scherzer will hit the IL with a 2.54 ERA in his debut season with the Mets.
