The Yankees just can't seem to catch a break from the umpires lately.

On Sunday night against the Red Sox, just days after manager Aaron Boone was ejected amid a series of blown calls that came in a game against the Rays, third-base coach Phil Nevin and bench coach Carlos Mendoza got the heave for arguing balls and strikes.

The situation played out when Yankees infielder Rougned Odor came to the plate against Boston reliever Matt Barnes with the game potentially on the line in the bottom of the ninth inning. With the scored tied at 4, there were two outs and two baserunners aboard.

But rather than send the Yankees' to a dramatic walk-off win against their division rivals, Odor was called out looking by home-plate umpire Gabe Morales on a very questionable curveball that appeared to be well outside to the left-handed hitter. Odor dropped his bat in disgust at the call, and gave the spot of the pitch a good look, lingering at the plate after he had been rung up.

Nevin, from the bench, gave Morales an earful between innings, and was promptly tossed. He was briefly restrained by the Yankees' bench from leaving the dugout to confront Morales, but made his way out onto the field to get his money's worth.

Mendoza was then tossed during the top half of the 10th inning, when second-base umpire Bill Miller appeared to be confused about exactly which Yankees coach was riding him from the bench. Replays showed it was in fact Yankees coach Marcus Thames who was giving Miller a hard time, but the ump seemed to get it wrong amid the commotion.

The Yankees fell in 10 innings as the Red Sox completed the three-game sweep, further compounding their frustration. After dropping 8 of their past 10 games, the Bombers have fallen two games over .500 and fourth place in the NL East, 6.5 behind the Rays.

Nevin, 50, returned to the Yankees' bench on Friday for the first time this season after being sidelined due to a bout with coronavirus. He said he lost 22 pounds during the ordeal.
