Tennis star Naomi Osaka delivered an awkward moment during her trophy speech after winning the Australian Open on Saturday.
The 23-year-old Osaka had a confusing interaction with opponent Jennifer Brady during her speech, after dispatching the American in straight sets to capture her fourth career Grand Slam title.
Osaka, seeking to clear up confusion about her relatively unheralded rival, asked Brady about the preferred rendering of her first name -- but seemed to mishear her vanquished foe's response.
"Hello everyone," Osaka began. "Hi. Firstly, um, I want to con -- do you like to be called Jenny, or Jennifer?" she asked, turning toward Brady.
"Jenny," Brady answered.
"Ok. Firstly I want to congratulate Jennifer," Osaka replied, apparently getting it wrong.
The flub spawned a slew of jokes on social media, but the rest of Osaka's gracious remarks left little doubt it was very likely an honest mistake.
"We played in the semis of the US Open a couple months ago, and I told everyone that would listen that you were going to be a problem. And I was right."
Osaka then complimented Brady, seeded 22nd in the tournament, on her improvement from their last matchup, and predicted they would face off again in the future.
Osaka has now won the Australian Open and US Open twice each.
