Rasheed Wallace is moving into the college coaching ranks.
The former NBA All-Star has joined Penny Hardaway’s staff as an assistant coach at the University of Memphis, according to Stadium’s Shams Charania.
Wallace would reunite with former Pistons head coach Larry Brown, who is also an assistant on the staff.
His reported hiring also comes as Memphis is preparing to welcome five-star recruit Emoni Bates to campus this weekend.
The 46-year-old has dabbled in coaching before, joining the Detroit Pistons staff as an assistant in 2013 after signing a two-year contract, but was not rehired when Detroit brought in new head coach Stan Van Gundy the following year.
In 2019, he was hired as the men’s head varsity coach at Charles E. Jordan High School in Durham, North Carolina.
Wallace spent 16 seasons in the NBA, playing for the Washington Bullets, Portland Trail Blazers, Atlanta Hawks, Detroit Pistons, Boston Celtics and New York Knicks.
He was a four-time All-Star and NBA champion with the 2004 Pistons. He retired following the 2009-10 season with the Celtics for two years before returning to the NBA at age 38 to join the Knicks in 2012-13.
Wallace’s reputation as a player was for his emotional personality and hard style of play, which could often become confrontational. He holds the NBA record for most technical fouls and most ejections in a season.
