The NCAA is planning a significant expansion of its signature basketball tournaments, announcing that both the men’s and women’s versions of March Madness will grow to 76 teams beginning in 2027.
The move marks the latest change to the tournament format, which currently features 68 teams. Under the new structure, eight additional teams will be added, creating more opportunities for programs to compete on college basketball’s biggest stage.
While specific details are still being finalized, the expansion is expected to include additional play-in games, similar to the current “First Four” format. That would likely mean more early-round matchups before the traditional 64-team bracket begins.
NCAA officials say the decision is aimed at increasing access and inclusivity across Division I basketball, while also capitalizing on the continued popularity and growth of both tournaments—especially on the women’s side in recent years.
The change is slated to take effect for the 2027 tournaments, giving schools, conferences, and broadcasters time to adjust to the new format.
