The Boston Red Sox are starting to up their offers to Rafael Devers, but at this juncture it appears they've yet to make substantial progress.
According to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman, the Red Sox raised their offer to Devers to “$200-million plus,” but Heyman said the two sides remain far apart. MLB reporter Yancen Pujols reported earlier in the week that the Red Sox had sent a senior executive to visit Devers and resume negotiations.
During the season, the Red Sox were said to be using Matt Olson's contract as a comparison, which is well below Devers’ market value. Another young third baseman, Austin Riley, got a $212 million in his extension with the Braves, and Devers seems likely to pass that. Heyman indicated Devers is seeking a deal in the 10-year, $300 million neighborhood.
The Red Sox raising their offers is a step in the right direction, but they will have to keep upping the number if they wants to ensure Devers, who will be a free agent after next season, is part of their long-term plans.
